Affont
Affont 1.1.8Latest

Important: If you use the Affinity scripts, import them again to get the new template styles and the joining circles: in Affont, Settings ▸ Scripts for Affinity ▸ Save…; in Affinity, Script Library ▸ ▾ menu ▸ Import scripts…

  • Affinity files, natively: Affont opens and reads your .af files directly, no scripts in between. The Affinity button opens a ready .af template in Affinity, you draw, save and “Reload .af” brings the letters in. You can also load any .af or drag it onto the window.
  • New Affont Kerning Engine: it measures the shape of each letter and the white space in every pair, and it was trained on the spacing and kerning of 296 professional fonts. The result lands closer to what a type designer would do, with almost no kerning where none is needed.
  • One button, “Space & kern…”, in Font, Spacing and Kerning, with a switch to do both or just one.
  • Template styles in Affinity: Sans serif, Serif, Handwritten and Script (joined letters), each with its own reference letter, metrics and slant.
  • Joined scripts: a circle on each side bearing marks where the letter joins, and spacing joins each letter to the next right there, with no gaps.
  • Demo version: in Export, turn on “Also export a demo version” and every export also gives you a “My Font Demo” copy to give away or show, with the figures, symbols, accented letters or letters you pick left empty or replaced by your logo.
  • When the app opens, autosaved work is no longer lost if the license check takes a while.
Affont 1.1.7
  • Italics and obliques: smart spacing and smart kerning measure along the italic angle, and the LSB/RSB lines lean with it. In Info, “Measure” reads the angle from your straight stems.
  • Standard glyph names: − ‰ ⁄ and the extended Latin letters (Č Ł Ő Š Ž…) get their usual names (minus, perthousand, fraction, Ccaron) instead of uniXXXX. Older projects update when you open them.
Affont 1.1.6

Important: To get ₫ in the template’s Vietnamese set, import the Affinity scripts again: in Affont, Settings ▸ Scripts for Affinity ▸ Save…; in Affinity, Script Library ▸ ▾ menu ▸ Import scripts…

  • Type right on the text in Font, Kerning, Spacing, Ligatures and Preview: a click puts the cursor between the letters. The Font strip is now a clean sample, without kerning.
  • Double-click a letter in the text to see its alternates and try them right there.
  • Random alternates for handwriting: each letter takes turns between its forms, and two neighbours never come out the same.
  • In Font you can select several letters at once (⌘/Ctrl + click, Shift + click), and “Baseline…” sits them on the baseline together, even ones with an irregular bottom.
  • Batches from Affinity: every send from a document comes out at the same size, the comma can be named in “All in order”, and typing there no longer erases the names you had. The vertical bar | no longer shows as “not valid”.
  • Vietnamese: the đồng sign (₫) in the Vietnamese set, and in “Build accented” the tone mark goes beside the circumflex (ấ ầ ẩ), the way Vietnamese is written.
  • Export no longer fails with font names in Vietnamese, Japanese or Thai, or with a copyright that has ’ or —.
  • Glyph editor: a Layers panel with booleans (Unite, Subtract, Intersect, Exclude), copy and paste shapes between letters, Clear, and a magnet that snaps what you move to the guides or the center.
  • Smart spacing and smart kerning are now right next to ab · AB · Ab · 1), and a new Texts menu offers test texts: control (nnann · HHAHH), Hamburgefonstiv, pangrams, kerning pairs, a paragraph and more.
  • Cleaner toolbars: Paste, the OpenType features in Preview and the Font filter are menus now; in the Glyph editor, ⌘/Ctrl+0 centers the view and moving the LSB keeps the letter still.
  • Ligatures and alternates in Spacing and Kerning: typing ff shows the ligature, /a.alt1 types any glyph by its name, you can search them by name, and smart spacing and kerning include them too.
  • A welcome guide for Affinity: a document that walks you through everything, step by step, with a practice font ready to send. Open it from the last step of the welcome or from the Guide.
Affont 1.1.5

Important: To get the new sets in the template and the batch fix, import the Affinity scripts again: in Affont, Settings ▸ Scripts for Affinity ▸ Save…; in Affinity, Script Library ▸ ▾ menu ▸ Import scripts…

  • Thai: vowels and tone marks place themselves on each consonant, as in Thai typefaces: the tone sits above the vowel without overlapping it, marks move left of the ascender of ป ฝ ฟ, and the lower vowel drops below the tail of ฎ ฏ. Combining accents are centered on the letter and stack.
  • Export also as WOFF, the web font for older browsers and apps.
  • Two new sets in “Add set…” and in the template: “Latin multilingual (Europe)” and “Latin multilingual (Europe, Asia & Pacific)”.
  • “Build accented” adds caron, dot, double acute, macron, ogonek and comma below (č ż ő ā ą ș) and raises the accent over ascenders (ĥ ĺ).
  • In a batch sent without the template, accented letters no longer come out smaller: À is as tall as A.
Affont 1.1.4
  • In Kerning, Spacing and Preview, letters you haven’t drawn yet show in the system font, in faint gray: a preview of the ones still left to build.
  • If your license is already active on 3 devices, you can disconnect one from your affont.org account or with the purchase email.
Affont 1.1.3
  • Affont now supports contextual alternates: each alternate chooses when it appears on its own, at the start or end of a word, when the letter repeats in a row or is already in the word, or next to certain letters.
  • Ligatures can also appear only in certain places: for example, joining R + A only at the start of a word.
  • Alternates named “.init” and “.fina” now appear on their own at the start and end of a word.
  • In Ligatures, a button takes you straight to the Alternates, without scrolling.
  • In Kerning and Spacing, the test texts start empty, and a new button fills them with a sample in the language you choose, or mixing all of them, with words that have the pair or letter you’re adjusting.
Affont 1.1.2

Important: To send bitmap letters from Affinity, import the Affinity scripts again: in Affont, Settings ▸ “Scripts for Affinity (.afscripts)…”; in Affinity, Script Library ▸ ▾ menu ▸ Import scripts…

  • Affont now supports bitmap letters: draw or paint letters in Affinity’s Pixel studio and Affont will build the typeface in OpenType-SVG format with your design.
  • Bitmap letters can now be auto-vectorized from Affont.
  • “Import SVG or PNG…”: PNG is now also accepted as a way to import glyphs.
Affont 1.1.1

Important: To send several letters without a template, import the Affinity scripts again: in Affont, Settings ▸ “Scripts for Affinity (.afscripts)…”; in Affinity, Script Library ▸ ▾ menu ▸ Import scripts…

  • Several letters at once, without a template: in Affinity draw them side by side, select them and run “Affont - Send”; in Affont you type which character each one is, and they are scaled and set on the baseline.
  • In Glyph, a click selects a shape (the i and its dot are two) to move, scale, rotate or delete it on its own, and “Paste inside” adds what you copied to the letter without erasing what it already has.
  • Auto-space and Auto-kerning show the result live while you change the values, which you can now drag sideways; close without applying and everything stays as it was.
Affont 1.1.0

Important: To get the Affinity scripts in French, import them again: in Affont, Settings ▸ “Scripts for Affinity (.afscripts)…”; in Affinity, Script Library ▸ ▾ menu ▸ Import scripts…

  • Smart spacing and kerning: “Auto-space…” sets the side bearings from the shape of each letter, with the air of your n, and “Auto-kerning…” groups letters with the same shape and adds only the pairs that are needed.
  • New Spacing mode inside Kerning: control strings, a long-text preview and a table with the side bearings of every letter, plus Reset… and Mono…
  • Redesigned kerning: text size and zoom (Ctrl/⌘ + wheel), long text no longer shrinks, pairs are shown inside real words and groups are clearer.
  • A complete guide inside the app, with search: the “Guide” button in the sidebar and the “?” on every screen.
  • Light mode: in Settings ▸ Appearance, choose Light, Dark or System, which follows your computer’s mode and is the default.
  • Affont is now available in French, including the Affinity scripts and the Mac menu; the Latin set adds the French letters and the font gets thin spaces.
  • Projects open with a double-click, and you can drag projects, fonts and SVG files onto the window.
  • Preview lets you try every feature your font has (small caps, figures, fractions…) and shows the gradients of color letters.
  • Saving now shows a confirmation, and anything to check after an export or a send from Affinity stays in “Notices”, at the bottom right.
  • Fixes: “Open…” asks about unsaved changes, undrawn letters are no longer exported as blank spaces, Uninstall finds the font even if you renamed it, and names with accents no longer lose letters.
  • In Glyph, a panel on the left with all your letters and a search box lets you pick another one without changing screens; it collapses and expands.
  • In Export, a language button next to “Export as image” chooses the language of the text in the specimen and the image.
  • On Windows, the preview and the Export specimen no longer show holes where the shapes of a letter overlap.

  • When exporting, Affont asks where to save the font the first time, and the notice shows the folder with a “Show” button.
  • Affinity template: new sets for basic ligatures, alternates (other styles, subscripts, fractions, etc.) and symbols (arrows, signs, currency, etc.).

  • The template’s Latin character set now includes the German letters (Ä, Ö, Ü, ß) and low quotation marks („ ‚), and “Build accented” also builds the umlauts.
  • New Thai character set: vowels and tone marks are drawn over a dotted circle, and in the font they sit on top of the previous letter.
Affont 1.0.6

Important: If one of your fonts had missing or broken letters, just export it again from Affont: you don’t need to send the letters from Affinity again.

  • Letters made of overlapping shapes that share edges no longer come out empty or with their counters filled in when you export the font.

  • The Affinity scripts’ windows appear in the language you use Affont in, even when Affont is closed. Before, they could appear in Spanish (for example on Windows).
  • The Affinity scripts show the Affont version they come from, in the window title and at the end of their description, so you can tell whether they’re up to date.
Affont 1.0.4
  • The Affinity scripts are named in the language you use Affont in (for example, “Affont - Send” in English).

  • When you open Affont after an update, you see what changed in the new version. It’s also in About ▸ What’s new.
